SCHEREZADE GARCÍA

SCHEREZADE GARCÍA

Scherezade García, a prominent visual artist from the Dominican diaspora, has built a solid career in fine art exploring themes of history, migration, collective memory, and colonization. Born in Santo Domingo, her work is distinguished by the way it approaches the narrative of the Americas, particularly from the Caribbean and Afro-descendant perspective. As co-founder of the Dominican York Proyecto GRÁFICA, García has been a fundamental voice in the representation of the Dominican diaspora in contemporary art, using her work to challenge and redefine concepts of identity and belonging.

García trained at renowned institutions such as the Altos de Chavón School of Design, Parsons School of Design | The New School, and the City College of New York, CUNY, where she honed her unique approach in combining traditional and contemporary techniques. Her exhibitions have been presented in spaces as diverse as the Museum of Art of the Americas, Columbia University, and the Museo de Arte de Santo Domingo, underscoring the international relevance of her work. Her work is included in the permanent collections of the Smithsonian American Art Museum, the Art Museum of the Americas, El Museo del Barrio, the Housatonic Museum of Art, the Museum of Modern Art in Santo Domingo, the Nasher Museum at Duke University, the Mellon Foundation, the Blanton Museum of Art, the Hudson River Museum of Art, LACMA (Los Angeles County Museum of Art), the Hood Museum of Art at Dartmouth College, and the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, among others.

In her work, García uses a carefully chosen palette to create a cinnamon color, a tone that she herself describes as an intentional representation of a mestizo figure. This chromatic approach is a visual metaphor for the racial and cultural mix that characterizes the Dominican and Caribbean diaspora. Her art deconstructs and juxtaposes symbols of Americanness, nationality, and freedom, all marked by the history of slavery and oppression, to present a powerful message of resistance and optimism. Through this visual narrative, García challenges traditional perceptions and offers a more inclusive view of American identity.

García is a faculty member at the University of Texas at Austin and has been part of the faculty at Parsons, where she has influenced new generations of artists. Recognized with prestigious awards such as the Joan Mitchell Foundation Fellowship for Painters and Sculptors and the Colene Brown Art Prize, she has left a significant mark on contemporary art. Her monograph Scherezade García: From This Side of the Atlantic and her involvement with organizations such as the College Art Association and Arts Connection underscore her commitment to advancing arts and culture from the perspective of the diaspora. Through her work, Scherezade García not only explores the dynamics of history and identity, but also reaffirms the vitality and cultural richness of the Dominican diaspora in the art world.
